A 10 year luck pillars calculator takes your birth date, birth time and gender, then lists the ten-year chapters (Da Yun) of your BaZi chart with ages, stems and branches. You can also check the result by hand: the start age comes from the interval between your birth and a solar term. BaZi is a cultural tradition used here for reflection and entertainment, not a forecast.
Use the 10 Year Luck Pillars Calculator
A good calculator asks for a birth date, birth time (with an option if you do not know it), gender, birth city or time zone, and whether daylight saving was in effect. It should return the start age, the direction (forward or reverse), the age range of each pillar, and a highlighted current decade. It does not predict outcomes. It only lays out the sequence that tradition uses as a reflective lens.
Have your birth date, the local clock time at birth if you know it, and the city where you were born. Check whether daylight saving applied on that date, because a birth record may already include it.
What a 10-Year Luck Pillar (Da Yun) Is
A luck pillar is one Heavenly Stem plus one Earthly Branch that covers ten years. A person typically passes through 7-8 pillars in a lifetime. If stems and branches are new to you, see our Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches plain guide.
Where the Month Pillar fits in
Luck pillars are derived from the Month Pillar and sequenced forward or backward from it in the traditional 60-pair cycle.
Luck pillar vs the zodiac year
Luck pillars are personal to your chart, while the zodiac year is the same for everyone.
Forward or Reverse? The Direction Rule
Direction depends on gender and the yin or yang polarity of the birth-year stem. The common convention is shown below. Some calculators label gender options differently, so check the setting they use.
| Birth-year stem | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Yang (Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren) | Forward | Reverse |
| Yin (Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui) | Reverse | Forward |
Forward means the pillars advance through the 60-pair sequence; reverse means they move backward from the month pillar.
How the Start Age Is Calculated, Step by Step
The first cycle does not begin on a birthday or at lunar new year, because month pillars and Da Yun timing follow solar terms (jieqi). Onset age is described as one of the more error-prone steps, so it is worth checking by hand.
- Find the solar terms on either side of your birth.
- Running forward, use the next term. Running reverse, use the previous term.
- Count the days between birth and that term.
- Divide by three: the traditional ratio is three days to one year, with the remainder converted into months and days. Confirm this against your tool's documented method.
Worked example
Imagine a fictional person running forward whose next solar term is 20 days after birth. 20 divided by 3 is 6 with 2 left over, so the first pillar begins at about age 6 to 7. Calculators round fractions differently, so two tools can differ by a year.
Sample Decade Table
Each pillar's stem forms a Ten God relationship with your Day Master, such as Resource, Peer, Output, Wealth or Influence. The BaZi glossary explains them. This table is illustrative only, for a start age of 7.
| Age | Pillar | Stem relationship |
|---|---|---|
| 7-16 | First | Resource |
| 17-26 | Second | Peer |
| 27-36 | Third | Output |
| 37-46 | Fourth | Wealth |
| 47-56 | Fifth | Influence |
To find your current decade, subtract your start age from your current age, divide by ten and round down. The remainder shows which year of the pillar you are in.
Reading a Luck Pillar Against Your Natal Chart
A pillar is read in relation to your Day Master, Ten Gods and element balance. Treat the themes as prompts, not predictions. No pillar is good or bad, only different in emphasis. Try journaling: what am I building right now, and what supports me? These are reflections, not guidance for financial, medical or legal choices.
Why Calculators Disagree, and How to Compare Them
Causes include solar term timing to the minute, time zone and daylight saving handling, solar-time correction, the gender setting, rounding and the Lichun boundary. Transition years are approximate within about 1-2 years. To compare, use the same inputs, time zone, DST setting, direction and start age. Our guide on why calculators give different results goes deeper.
Births in January or early February need extra care: the zodiac year changes at Lichun, around 4 February, not 1 January or lunar new year.
US Help and Missing Birth Times
Use local clock time at birth and note whether daylight saving applied. If your birth is near a solar term, verify the birth certificate time, hospital records, time zone and DST. See how to find your birth time.
Without a birth time, solar-time correction cannot be applied. Try early, midday and late times: if the start age and pillars stay the same, the result is stable; if not, treat it as uncertain. Read why birth time matters in BaZi for more.
Calculator or Reading?
Free calculators are good for the sequence and dates. A reading adds context from the whole chart, but it remains interpretation and entertainment. If you are curious, you can explore a Life Blueprint reading whenever it feels useful.
