What Is Fire Element in Chinese Zodiac? Years & Meaning

What is fire element in chinese zodiac? Learn which birth years are Fire, what it means, traits, the 2026 Fire Horse and the Lunar New Year cutoff.

Published by LuckTime

The fire element in the Chinese zodiac is the elemental layer of your birth year, drawn from Fire (火, huǒ), one of the five Wu Xing elements. Traditionally Fire is linked to "old yang" and to an expanding, upward, warming motion. Like all of Chinese astrology, it is best read as cultural tradition and self-reflection, not science or prediction.

What Is the Fire Element in the Chinese Zodiac? Quick Answer

  • Fire years end in 6 or 7.
  • Yang Fire = last digit 6. Yin Fire = last digit 7.
  • Births in January or early February may belong to the previous lunar year.

Each year carries one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. The element adds a second layer to the animal, so a Fire Horse and a Metal Horse are described differently in the tradition.

Which Birth Years Are Fire? Year Lookup Table

Year Animal Type
1946 Dog Yang Fire
1947 Pig Yin Fire
1956 Monkey Yang Fire
1957 Rooster Yin Fire
1966 Horse Yang Fire
1967 Sheep Yin Fire
1976 Dragon Yang Fire
1977 Snake Yin Fire
1986 Tiger Yang Fire
1987 Rabbit Yin Fire
1996 Rat Yang Fire
1997 Ox Yin Fire
2006 Dog Yang Fire
2007 Pig Yin Fire
2016 Monkey Yang Fire
2017 Rooster Yin Fire
2026 Horse Yang Fire

The pattern repeats every 60 years, and each element appears in two consecutive years: yang first, then yin.

Lunar New Year cutoff: check January and early-February births

The Chinese zodiac year starts at Lunar New Year, not on January 1. The 2026 Horse year begins on February 17, 2026, so someone born on February 5, 2026 would belong to the previous year (Snake). If you were born in January or February, look up the Lunar New Year date for your birth year first. If you were born before it, use the previous year, then check the last digit.

How the System Works: Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches

The year's element comes from the Heavenly Stems, a set of 10 symbols made of the five elements, each in a yin and a yang form. These pair with the 12 Earthly Branches, which are the animals, and together they produce the 60-year cycle. The last digit of a year points to its stem, which is why 6 and 7 mean Fire. For more detail, see our Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches plain guide or what BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) is.

Year element vs an animal's inherent element

Two meanings of "element" cause confusion. The year element is the stem element, as above. Separately, each animal has its own traditional element. Most sources list Snake and Horse as the Fire animals, and some also list Sheep. Treat this as a difference between sources rather than an error to fix.

Fire Meaning: Traits, Associations and Symbolism

Traditional sources link Fire with summer, the south, Mars, hot weather and the Vermilion Bird. Red is given for yang Fire and purple for yin Fire. Fire also corresponds to the heart, small intestine, tongue and pulse, with joy as its positive emotion and hate as its negative one. Sources vary on how they pair the organs with yin and yang. These are symbolic correspondences, not medical information, so please do not make health decisions from them.

Strengths often attributed to Fire: passion, enthusiasm, creativity, dynamism and persistence.

Growth edges: restlessness, impatience, impulsiveness, aggression, vanity, jealousy and frustration.

These are reflective tendencies, not fixed labels. Symbolically, fire stands for warmth and energy. In balance it is read as joy; in excess, as overheating.

Fire in the Five Elements Cycles, and Western Fire Signs

In the generating cycle, Wood feeds Fire and Fire produces Earth. In the controlling cycle, Water controls Fire and Fire controls Metal. Think of these as a symbolic map of how energies relate, not a verdict on how people will get along.

Western astrology also has fire signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The two systems share a theme of energy, but they are separate. Chinese Fire comes from your birth year in a stem-branch cycle, while Western fire signs come from the Sun's position at birth. An Aries is not automatically a Fire Horse.

2026 Fire Horse and Reflective Ways to Balance Fire

2026 is a Fire Horse year, pairing the Horse with yang Fire. Treat this as a theme of the calendar, not a forecast for anyone. A calm takeaway is to pace your energy and channel enthusiasm into something constructive.

If you like a symbolic way to balance Fire, here are optional ideas. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so quiet time, rest or a pause before reacting fits that image. Journaling moments of impatience and what set them off is another. These are traditions for reflection, not guarantees, and not a basis for medical, financial or legal decisions. Most sources list Snake and Horse, and some add Sheep. Separately, any animal can have a Fire year element, as the table shows.
