The answer depends on which system you mean. Your Western sun sign gives Fire, Earth, Air or Water. Your Chinese birth year gives Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. BaZi uses your birth day to find a Day Master. This guide walks through each method so you can check them yourself.
Quick Answer: Which Element Do You Mean?
| System | What it uses | Possible elements |
|---|---|---|
| Western zodiac | Birthday (sun sign) | Fire, Earth, Air, Water (4) |
| Chinese or feng shui birth-year element | Last digit of birth year | Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water (5) |
| BaZi Day Master | Birth day (plus other pillars) | 10 stems: Yang and Yin of the five elements |
The Western set is not the Chinese Wu Xing (Five Elements) set. Some names overlap, but the traditions use them differently. Everything here is cultural tradition, entertainment and self-reflection, not science or prediction.
Western Zodiac Element by Birth Date
Your Western element follows your sun sign, which follows your birthday. For example, an August 10 birthday is Leo, which is Fire.
| Sign | Approx. dates | Element |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mar 21 – Apr 19 | Fire |
| Taurus | Apr 20 – May 20 | Earth |
| Gemini | May 21 – Jun 20 | Air |
| Cancer | Jun 21 – Jul 22 | Water |
| Leo | Jul 23 – Aug 22 | Fire |
| Virgo | Aug 23 – Sep 22 | Earth |
| Libra | Sep 23 – Oct 22 | Air |
| Scorpio | Oct 23 – Nov 21 | Water |
| Sagittarius | Nov 22 – Dec 21 | Fire |
| Capricorn | Dec 22 – Jan 19 | Earth |
| Aquarius | Jan 20 – Feb 18 | Air |
| Pisces | Feb 19 – Mar 20 | Water |
Dates can shift by a day in some years, so if you were born on a cusp, check a sign calculator.
Chinese Birth Element: The Last-Digit Lookup
This element comes from Wu Xing, the Five Elements theory, and depends on the last digit of your birth year.
| Last digit | Element |
|---|---|
| 0 or 1 | Metal |
| 2 or 3 | Water |
| 4 or 5 | Wood |
| 6 or 7 | Fire |
| 8 or 9 | Earth |
Worked example: born in 1985? The last digit is 5, so Wood. Adjust the year first if you were born in January or February (see below).
Each element covers two consecutive years: an even last digit is Yang and an odd one is Yin.
Born in January or February? The Year Cutoff Rules
The Chinese calendar does not run January to January, so early-year births can belong to the previous year. Two cutoffs are in use, and sources differ on which applies where.
Rule 1: Chinese New Year
This is the usual rule for zodiac animals and the birth-year element. LoveToKnow gives two examples. A 2-20-1981 birthday counts as 1981, because New Year was 2-5-1981. A 1-22-1974 birthday counts as 1973, because the 1974 New Year was 1-23-1974. That person's last digit is 3, so Water, not Wood.
Rule 2: Start of Spring
Some feng shui pages, such as PotalaStore, say that births before February 4 or 5 may belong to the previous year. BaZi works from solar terms such as Li Chun (Start of Spring), and the exact moment shifts each year, so Feb 4 is not a fixed rule.
If you were born between late January and early February, look up the Chinese New Year date for your year and see which side you fall on. Never assume January 1 starts the year.
Animal Plus Element: The 60-Year Cycle
The Chinese zodiac follows a 60-year cycle in which each of the 12 animals pairs with one of the five elements, split into Yin and Yang. A Wood Rabbit is a Rabbit year whose element is Wood. For the animals themselves, see What Is Chinese Zodiac? 12 Animals and Your Sign.
Kua Number: Why Results Can Differ
A Kua number is a separate feng shui calculation based on birth year and gender, so it answers a different question from the last-digit lookup and the two may not match. Blooming Sense gives this method for women born January 1 – February 15: subtract 1 from the birth year, reduce the digits to a single digit, and treat 5 as 8. Check the full formulas with a source you trust.
BaZi Day Master: The Deeper Element (Needs Verification)
This is a brief note, so confirm details with a calculator or a full explanation. A BaZi chart has four pillars (year, month, day, hour), each with a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The Day Master is the stem of the day pillar and represents the self in the chart. There are ten stems, a Yang and Yin version of each element, so your Day Master can differ from your birth-year element. Read what a Day Master is in plain English.
Your birth date gives the day pillar. Birth time adds the hour pillar, so the chart is less complete without it. See why birth time matters.
Do Birth-Month Element Lists Mean Anything?
Many pages assign one element to each birth month. There is no confirmed traditional basis for a simple month-to-element label. BaZi does give each chart a month pillar based on solar terms, but that is not a single label. Treat month lists as entertainment.
What Each Element Is Said to Mean
These are cultural associations, not fixed traits.
- Wood: growth, flexibility, planning; linked with spring and green.
- Fire: warmth, expression, enthusiasm; linked with summer and red.
- Earth: stability, patience, care; linked with yellow or brown.
- Metal: structure, precision, clarity; linked with autumn and white or gray.
- Water: flow, adaptability, reflection; linked with winter and blue or black.
A full chart holds a mix of elements, not just one. For light-touch use, try journaling about your strengths, or choose colors and decor you simply enjoy.
